Privacy
Last updated 22 October 2026. FanFam is in testing, so this page may change; we'll update the date when it does.
The short version
- During a run FanFam only shares distance, time and pace. Your route stays on your phone unless you choose to share it with fans you pick, after the run, with the start, finish and your private places removed. The exception is a live map: on by default for races (all your approved fans), and only if you switch it on for an ordinary run (only fans you allow to see routes).
- Only fans the runner approves can follow their runs, see their photo or send them messages.
- Voice messages are deleted 24 hours after the runner plays them, or after 7 days if they never do.
- We don't sell your information or use it for advertising, and there are no ad trackers.
- Email privacy@fanfam.app any time to see or delete what we hold about you.
Who we are
FanFam is run by Luke Richecoeur (trading as FanFam) in the UK, who is responsible for your information. Contact: privacy@fanfam.app.
What we collect
If you're a runner
- The first name you type, and a profile photo if you add one.
- Each run's distance, time, pace, start time and status, plus any planned distance, target time or race name you enter.
- Your settings, such as km or miles and how cheers play.
If you're a fan
- The name you give when you ask to join someone's FanFam.
- The voice and text messages you choose to send, and the "From" name you put on them.
For everyone
- A random private key that identifies your phone or browser to FanFam. There are no accounts or passwords.
- If you use the iPhone app and allow notifications: your phone's notification address from Apple, your time zone, your 12/24-hour setting and which alerts you want. The same goes for the live lock-screen panel.
- Anonymous usage records, such as "a run started", "a cheer was sent" and "used FanFam today on iPhone". These are stored against scrambled codes, not names, and include distance and time every 15 seconds during a run (never location). We use them to understand how FanFam is used and to improve it.
- When a runner profile is created: a broad description of the device (for example "iPhone, Safari"), the country if our hosting tells us, and a scrambled code for the internet connection. The connection code is kept for one day to stop automated sign-ups.
- If something breaks, technical error details (no messages or run data) may be sent to our website host so it can be fixed.
Location
FanFam uses your phone's GPS during a run to work out how far you've gone. In the iPhone app your route is also saved on your phone, so you can see it on a map in your run history; it's left out of your iCloud backups and is never sent to us, except a route you choose to share or a live race map (below). During an ordinary run, only distance, time and pace are shared.
Routes (optional)
If you turn on route sharing, your iPhone first removes the first and last 300 metres of the route and any part inside a privacy zone you've set, and then uploads only the remaining route, after the run has finished. Only fans you've individually allowed to see your routes can view them. Removing that permission, or removing the fan, stops their access immediately. Shared routes are deleted automatically 30 days after the run, or straight away if you stop sharing or delete the run. Your privacy zones are stored only on your phone and are never sent to us.
Live maps
For runs you set up as a race in the iPhone app, FanFam shares your current position with your approved fans during the race, unless you turn this off for that race. For an ordinary run this only happens if you switch it on, and only fans you've allowed to see your routes can see it; your position is also hidden for the first 300 metres. We keep only your latest position while the race is live, and nothing is sent while you're inside one of your privacy zones. When the race finishes, or you turn the map off, the live position is deleted straight away. The finished route then follows the route-sharing rules above. Fans' screens draw the route from the positions they receive while they're watching.
Who can see what
- Anyone with a runner's FanFam link sees only the runner's first name and can ask to join.
- Approved fans see the runner's photo, live runs, upcoming scheduled runs, the names on messages sent during a run, and the runner's past runs (distance, time, pace, splits and how many cheers; not who cheered), unless the runner turns history off.
- The runner sees their fans' names and the messages sent to them, and decides who's approved.
- The FanFam team can see totals (for example how many runs and cheers there were), plus each runner's first name, sign-up date, device type, country and number of fans and runs. This helps us run the service and keep out fake sign-ups. We don't listen to voice messages.
How long we keep it
- Voice recordings: deleted automatically 24 hours after the runner first plays them, or 7 days after they were sent if the runner never plays them (the runner gets a reminder the day before). A record that a message was sent, and who it was from, stays with the run.
- Profiles, fans, runs and text messages: kept while the profile is in use, or until you ask us to delete them. A runner can also hide or delete messages themselves.
- Anonymous usage records: kept to track how FanFam is doing over time. They can't be linked back to a deleted profile.
- Sign-up connection codes: one day.
- Shared routes: 30 days after the run, or sooner if the runner stops sharing or deletes the run.
- Live race positions: only the latest one is kept, and it's deleted when the race finishes.
Services we use
To run FanFam we use a small number of providers who store or process information for us, under their own security and data-protection terms:
- Supabase: our database and file storage (profiles, runs, messages, photos).
- Lovable: hosts the fanfam.app website.
- Apple: delivers notifications and lock-screen panels to iPhones, and distributes the beta app through TestFlight.
- Cloudflare: runs our domain name.
- Google Fonts: the website's fonts, which your browser downloads from Google.
- OpenStreetMap: the map images behind a shared route on the website, which your browser downloads from OpenStreetMap.
Some of these providers may store information outside the UK. When they do, they use the legal safeguards UK data-protection law requires.
Why we're allowed to use it
We use your information to provide FanFam as you've asked: sharing runs with approved fans and delivering their messages. We also use it for our legitimate interests in keeping the service working, safe and free of fake accounts, and in understanding how it's used through anonymous totals. Notifications and live panels only happen if you allow them on your phone.
Children
Runner profiles are for people aged 13 and over. Younger children can record cheers on a parent's or carer's phone, with that adult's permission. If you think a child has given us information without permission, email privacy@fanfam.app and we'll delete it.
Your rights
Under UK data-protection law you can ask to see the information we hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, object to how we use it, or ask us to limit its use. Email privacy@fanfam.app from any address. To help us find your data, include your first name and your runner or fan link if you can. We'll reply within one month.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Cookies and storage on your device
FanFam doesn't use advertising or tracking cookies. The website saves a few things in your browser so it works: your private key, your name, the FanFams you've joined, and your settings such as light or dark mode. Clearing your browser's data removes them.
